Dec 3 A Century of Liquid Fire--Neon's Bright History

Main idea:

This article tells the history of neon lights.  Neon light was invented by a French, Georges Claude.  At first, the light only glowed with a reddish-orange color, which was hardly accepted by the crowd.  Later in 1912, the business had a huge breakthrough.  Claude bent the tubes into the shape of letters and produced different colors.  After that, some famous companies used neon as a way to advertise.  In the 50s, neon is adopted in more and  more restaurants and movies; then, it was the golden age of neon.

英文對顏色有很細的分別，除了red之外，還有很多 ：
crisom暗紅色的
ruby紅寶石色的
scarlet鮮紅色的

bend除了有「使彎曲」的意思之外，
延伸義：She tried to bend her husband into her wishes.
表示什麼呢？

因此原為：the signs which wer lit by "liquid fire"
另外light這個動詞有兩種動詞三態變化
當light當作「點燃」的意思時，三態為light, lit, lit
而當「照亮」時，三態為lighted, lighted

line 12 lure吸引

形容詞alluring表示吸引人的，同義字還有appealing, attractive, fascinating, inviting, enchanting等等，請注意你的課本第十一課單字補充是否有寫上這些喔！

上次學到dip是蘸的意思，這次的dip則是「下降」的意思喔！
也就是，neon signs已經不像五零年代那樣熱門了，使用率已經慢慢下滑了

line 14 draw

draw有很多意思，除了最常見的「畫」之外，
還有「拔出、引出」的意思，例如：Draw your weapon!
在這邊，draw的意思變成「吸引」，
也就是draw your attention 的意思！
也可以說attract your attention或appeal to your attentiion或catch your attention
過癮吧！
